With the cycling world waiting to see whether this year's Tour of California winner, Floyd Landis, can live up to his status as favourite for victory in the Tour de France, the organisers of the Californian race have cleverly chosen to announce their route for the second edition of their event in February 2007.

As has been rumoured in recent weeks, the race is set to make a first visit to California's state capital, Sacramento. The race will start once again with a prologue in downtown San Francisco, which takes place on February 18, then move north into Marin county for a stage from Sausalito to Santa Rosa. The next day's stage takes the race to Sacramento.

The event then starts to move south to San Jose, then San Luis Obispo. Friday the 23rd brings what is certain to be a key stage, a time trial in Solvang, Discovery Channel's Californian training camp base. The final two stages take the race to Santa Clarita, and then to a concluding circuit race stage in Long Beach, south of Los Angeles.

The stages:

Prologue: Sunday, Feb 18, San Francisco
Stage 1: Monday, Feb 19, Sausalito-Santa Rosa
Stage 2: Tuesday, Feb 20, Santa Rosa-Sacramento
Stage 3: Wednesday, Feb 21, Stockton-San Jose
Stage 4: Thursday, Feb 22, Seaside-San Luis Obispo
Stage 5: Friday, Feb 23, Solvang Time Trial
Stage 6: Saturday, Feb 24, Santa Barbara-Santa Clarita
Stage 7: Sunday, Feb 25, Long Beach Circuit Race
