UK time trial round-up: Horner takes victory in South Yorks

Just one second
separated the top two riders in Rutland Cycling Club's 10-mile Christmas time
trial on the Hatfield Woodhouse course in
Warrington Road Club’s
Malcolm Horner made a worthwhile trip over the Pennines from
Verulam CC’s Jonathan Shubert, 22, had to settle for second spot with 23min 5sec, while the podium was completed by Scunthorpe Poly CC rider Anthony Nash, 43, with 23min 15sec.
Fourth overall and fastest veteran on standard, 63-year-old Tony Stott (Westbrook Cycles) posted a time of 23min 53sec for a plus of 6:38 over his age standard. The promoting club’s Peter Goodfellow and Emilie Verroken (MI Racing) took the tandem prize with an impressive time of 24 min 6sec.

A good field of 95 riders turned out for the event, which was staged on a new course on the A50 near Holmes Chapel. After rain and ice in previous days, they were greeted by good, sunny conditions, if still a little cold.
Coventry CC’s Sharon
Clifford made a worthwhile trip north by taking the women’s prize with her time
of 31min 55sec, while Abbotsford Park CC juvenile Alex Royle continued to show
promise with a time of 25min 12sec. Juniors was won by Jack Green, while Dave Ardern and Pat Kinch (
Barnesbury CC event called off due to roadworks
A traditional event on the Christmas calendar, the Barnesbury CC 10-mile time trial on the Arcot Lane course near Boghouses, Tyne and Wear, was called off because of roadworks on the course.
The popular event has been organised for many years by Eric Potts, who said: “There have been ongoing roadworks on the course for a while and they’re not going to be finished on time. There are roadworks on all suitable courses, which leaves me with no choice but to cancel. Hopefully we’ll be back next year.”
