Past masters on the start of the 2003 Newport Nocturne Newport Nocturne
The promoters of the Shropshire Star Newport Nocturne (Saturday,1 September) are auctioning a lap prize (aka a prime) on eBay to raise money for the Dave Rayner Fund. The Nocturne is Britain's only floodlit bike race and past editions have attracted crowds of 10,000-14,000 spectators.
The winner of the item gets the chance to have themselves, their company or message advertised during the commentary. Promoter, Nick Jeggo says, "Within reason, we don't mind what people want to advertise or say, whether it's to advertise a product, say "Happy Birthday" or even propose!"
The prime will be offered during the event's 'Past Masters' race which features former pro riders. However, the lap winner won't get the proceeds from the winning bid. The money will all go to the Dave Rayner Fund, which assists the development of promising young riders.
The main event will be a rare chance to see Tour de France riders and UK rising stars Mark Cavendish (T-Mobile) and Geraint Thomas (Barloworld) in action.
