Jan Ullrich has launced a defamation suit against German biologist Professor Werner Franke, who said in a TV interview last week that the former T-Mobile rider had spent almost 35,000 euros on doping products during a year. Ullrich's legal team have started a case against Franke in the Hamburg courts.
Franke, an anti-doping expert, based his allegation on information he had read in the Operacion Puerto blood doping report, and stated: "It's a long time since I've seen such excesses. Some people in his entourage have been really diabolical for having advised him to take these products and to get into contact with the Spanish doctor". Ullrich has been implicated in the case which focuses around Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.
If the case goes against him, Franke could face up to six months in prison and a 250,000-euro fine.
