US cop who attacked cycle protester leaves the force

By BikeRadar | Friday, Mar 13, 2009 4.30pm

A New York cop who was captured on video shoving a man off his bike during a cycle protest has left the force.

A spokesman for New York Police Department (NYPD) said Officer Patrick Pogan was fired two weeks ago. This was disputed by Mr Pogan's lawyer, Stuart London, who claimed his client had resigned.

Mr Pogan, 23, was filmed attacking cyclist Christopher Long during a Critical Mass demonstration in Manhattan last July.

Following the incident, Mr Long was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest, and held in custody for 26 hours.

But after video footage was posted on YouTube, the charges were dropped and Mr Pogan became the subject of scrutiny. He was accused of assault and of filing false paperwork relating to the arrest.

Mr Pogan’s statement said Long had been “weaving” through traffic and “forcing multiple vehicles to stop abruptly or change their direction in order to avoid hitting”.

But the video shows the rider moving in normal fashion down a street. The footage shows Pogan first walking towards Long, forcing him to swerve, then knocking the cyclist to the ground.

  • Horrendous police brutality, Glad he got the bullet (by the sound of things)

  • Quit the force...???

What about making giving him some paid vacation to the brick and get a taste of MAN love, LOL?

It is BS if he is not charged for such an assault?

  • Unbelievable - talk about power (of the uniform) trip!

  • So, if the cyclist had been found guilty he'd have ended up with a criminal record but if it's a police man, he just gets fired, or "resigns". When will the police forces of the world realise it's this kind of double standard that turns ordinary, law abiding folks against them?

  • Pathetic. That was a vicious assault on a cyclist who was merely riding his bike. Anybody who does something lke this should be taken straight to court.

  • I think losing his job was a far better punishment than sending him to prison for two months, especially with the recession and all.

  • It is unfortunate that such scum is able to obtain an honorable job enforcing the law. These are the bad apples that make the bad stereotypes and nicknames true. I am glad there are citizens willing to step forward and expose these criminal acts. I hope if I am ever in a similar situation, there is someone video taping and willing to come forward to help me.

Cops should be examples of the law, and when they break it they should still be used as an example. If criminal charges do not get filed against this former police officer this perpetuates the notion that the cops are above the law.

  • Not only pushing the cyclist off his bike the police thug then concocted a pack of lies to make it look as if the cyclist was the guilty party who had been in the wrong and assaulted the officer. I hope the cyclist sues, being the US he'll get substantial payout. Police brutality and corruption US style.

  • Stupid, Stupid Cop there were so many of us and two of them...

  • Thats just plain wrong, he should get a record for assault.

Also, around the 40 second mark, is it just me or does it look like that woman is going to steal his bike???

  • Think of what would have happened had this not been on video. The cyclist might still be sitting in jail for assault on a police officer. Because, as we know, the police ALWAYS tell the truth!!!!

  • i lived in nyc for 15+ years. i'm not a big fan of the NYPD, but also understand they have a service to provide the city. i'm sure there are plenty more good cops than bad ones in nyc... obviously, that cop definitely deserves to lose his job if not more, but that being said, the critical mass rides are a bunch of b.s. it's a total disruption where ever the ride passes through the city. organization is nil. traffic comes to halt. pedestrians safety is compromised. cops are provoked. i'm really not surprised an officer snapped on a rider... i may not be big supporter of the police, but i'll never support critical mass

  • I don't think the woman was trying to steal the bike...I think she was a fellow cyclist saving the victims bike from the black hole known as the "evidence" locker!

  • As a UK police officer myself, (and major cyclist) I just have to wonder if there was something that the camera didn't see and find it hard to believe that this was a completely unprovoked attack.

There is just no way that the police could do what is in the video without reasonable justification. Was the cyclist arrrested for anything??

If it was unprovoked then the officer deserves to be out of a job and should be before the courts.

If it was unprovoked, it is utterly disgusting. If the camera hid something, then I have to say, I feel for the officer.

  • And now cops from all over the world will look for possible provocation (provoker was cyclist i guess). That cop is coplete idiot. The way he attacked he could kill the cyclist. Looks like has no brains enough to understand that.

  • Why do people dislike cyclists?

  • I think people are just horrible to other people period...

Unfortunatly this particular incident involved a cycling event. I always disliked the idea of tribalism but it seems to exist in every part of the human race. Certain types of sports and their followers dislike other groups of sports and their followers with typical steriotypical banter - it often gets out of hand.

And sometimes - its just a big brute of a bloke who picks out some innocent guy he don't like the look of and will give him a hard time to get the power rush.

Ultimately its not about cycling - (despite someones comments on critical mass - the whole idea is to annoy everyone!!!!!) its people being horrible to people. He should face charges - even if he was provoked it was still assault.

  • big fat doughnut eating cop . probably couldnt ride a bike without stabilizers

  • Probably cause he's such a fat bastard that cant fit on a push bike...

  • The right to peaceful protest is something we should hold dear, but there has to be a point to it, too. What is the point of critical mass?

No matter how irritating it is, though - nothing justifies that attack. Even if the cyclist verbally abused the cop (which is the only thing I can think he could have done which the camera didn't pick up), that assault is OTT.

  • after watching this video it brings back memories it happened to me on a cycle path .....after some have a go hero pushed me off my my brand new carbon hardtail there was four of them ..... what they didnt know the guy they just assualted is a second dan black belt ....something snapped in me and i floored them and calmly inspected my bike for damage before setting off .... i do not think my actions were right but 9 years of tae kwon do kicked into action . i reacted on the spur off the moment . let this be a warning not all cyclists are soft touches .

  • duffers is a spanker!

  • not the real one, the apologist copper above

  • Look here. The cop watching him do it is just as guilty for not speaking up. I know the shield is king, but dude went over to partner before he did it and told him he was going to take someone out. You can see it on the video. The partner cop is just as guilty and needs to "leave the force" also perhaps...

  • To be fair, that's conjecture, weaky6. We have no way of knowing what the other cop knew or didn't know before the attack.

  • The video made wanna hurl!!! Fortunately, I was able to control my gag reflex. The only question I asked myself...What the hell??!!

  • Pintoo, do you think that guy signed the same police report that lead to the almost potential prosecution of the biker? Or do you think, he said, No way, I saw my partner out of the blue, run and slam this biker with no appearant reason? Which one do you think?

  • WTF!!! absolutely outragous!! bloody knob should go to prison without doubt atall.....but weaky6 and pintoo both have fair points. this cop cleary done it 4 a laugh and took it way 2 far.. both cops should have been prosicuted.

  • Weaky6 - I don't know for sure. There's always pressure for people to look after their own in all professions - it's not right and it shouldn't happen. But you can't accuse someone of something without evidence. We don't know what the other cop knew before the attack and we don't know whether he lied on the subsequent report or whether he did an Arsene Wenger and claimed not have seen anything. I understand the anger at the attacker - I'm sickened too - but going after the other cop is basically conjecture.
