PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Another day at the Tour of Burgos, another chance for Alejandro Valverde to demonstrate that he is the strongest man in the race. After a summit win on stage one, a sprint win on stage two, the Comunitat Valenciana-Kelme rider kept his unbeaten record on stage three, where he came in ahead of Denis Menchov and Leonardo Piepoli at the famous summit of Lagunas de Neila. Valverde's CV-Kelme team controlled the stage perfectly, allowing a break to go clear on the first of four categorised climbs, but reeling the final remains of it back in just after the start of the final ascent to the finish. Saunier Duval's Joaquin Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Dominguez both tried to go clear on the climb, but after some sustained pace-making by CV-Kelme with a kilometre to go only the leading three riders overall remained at the front. Menchov and Piepoli may have some good race wins to their credit in recent months, but beating Valverde in his current form is clearly as easy as it was to get the better of Lance Armstrong at the Tour de France a couple of weeks ago. When the trio began their sprint for the line there was only going to be one winner, with Valverde clinching a lucky 13th victory of the season just ahead of Menchov. That third victory maintained Valverde's narrow three-second margin over the Russian with just Thursday's stage to go. As well as the overall lead, Valverde also heads the points and mountains classifications going into the final day.
