PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Leontien Zijlaard Van Moorsel shrugged off the effects of Sunday's heavy crash in the Olympic road race to record a convincing victory in today's time trial event at Vougliagmeni. Despite admitting afterwards that she was still suffering the consequences of Sunday's crash, the Dutchwoman completed the 24-kilometre course 24 seconds faster than the USA's Dede Demet-Barry, who was a similar distance ahead of Switzerland's Karin Thuerig in third. Van Moorsel's successful defence of her time trial title was the perfect way to round off an incredibly successful career, which she has already said will end after the Athens Games. Briton Nicole Cooke's hopes of some redemption after finishing fifth on Sunday came to nought as she finished 19th, more than two and a half minutes behind Van Moorsel. British team manager John Herety reckoned, however, the young Welsh girl had ridden one of the best time trials of her career. Cooke said afterwards that she does not now expect to ride in the points race when the track events start later in the week. A full report on the race will follow later this evening. 1 Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel (Holland) 24km in 31.11 (46.15kph) 2 Deirdre Demet-Barry (USA) 0.24 3 Karin Thuerig (Switzerland) 0.43 4 Christine Thorburn (USA) 1.03 5 Lada Kozlikova (Czech Republic) 1.04 6 Oenone Wood (Australia) 1.05 7 Joane Somarriba (Spain) 1.14 8 Zoulfia Zabirova (Russia) 1.19 9 Priska Doppmann (Switzerland) 1.29 10 Edita Pucinskaite (Lithuania) 1.31 11 Judith Arndt (Germany) 1.35 12 Olga Slyusareva (Russia) 1.40 13 Mirjam Melchers (Holland) 1.50 14 Jeannie Longo (France) 1.54 15 Trixi Worrack (Germany) 16 Lyne Bessette (Canada) 2.13 17 Susan Palmer-Komar (Canada) 2.14 18 Dori Ruano (Spain) 2.18 19 Nicole Cooke (Great Britain) 2.34 20 Edwige Pitel (France) 2.51
