Video: DoubleBack VW campervan
We don't usually do stories about motor vehicles, but we reckon the new DoubleBack VW campervan is worth a look, given how popular the traditional campervan is with weekend riders.
As you can see from the video below, the DoubleBack looks like a VW Transporter T5, but at the push of a button its rear end expands to nearly double the size (insert inappropriate joke here). We can think of a few uses for this, like keeping your bikes secure while you get some rest in the middle of a 24 hour enduro. Or just extra space to sleep and cook in so you don't have to pitch a tent.
Unfortunately, size isn't the only thing that doubles: the DoubleBack VW retails for £55,000, which is nearly double the cost of a normal Transporter T5. The same applies to availability - expect to wait until the second half of the year to get one if you order it now from the Welsh-based company.

@fatbuddhaThe idea being that this isn't as big or cumbersome on the road as a normal motor home!

Without trying to sound like a cynical sod all this does is give you an extra sleeping area that slides out from around the passenger area/kitchen and a bit of extra headroom - but no extra space to carry bikes. In fact you lose almost all of loading space. It's a lovely design - no doubt about it - but if you want to ship five mates and five bikes get a standard LWB T5 and either take some tents or book into a B&B. You can even stick extra wheels, a power washer, a tool kit and a work stand into an LWB T5.

That is amazing. Genuinely brilliant.
The guy saying that it has less room than a huge motorhome is completely missing the point of VW campers. The key benefit of them is that they are tiny to drive.

I thought this was bikeradar. There's a clue in the name 'bike' radar. Why is a heavily modded VW van being shown on here? Oh, that's right, you could put your bike in it. Please.. If I wanted to look at this stuff I wouldn't be on a bike website, I'd be at the local McDonald's car park. Rubbish.

Hmm. Beds for four, travel seats for two or three. Something doesn't add up there.

Well, I think it is a really interesting idea. yeah, at £55k, there is no way I'm going to buy one, but I recently went on a cycling/camping tour of gb and we used one of these http://www.spaceshipsrentals.co.uk/ however this looks like a much neater and roomier solution.Sure the £55k would come down as more people bought them - think this is a fascinating solution with practical uses for the cyclist. Whilst driving around you could still put bikes on a bike rack, but at night when parked up you can stick them away. There is so much more room than a standard campervan - if they could bring it down to about £30k and I could get one second hand for £15k, I might be interested!
