Video: Gee Atherton vs motorbike at Fort William

By BikeRadar UK | Saturday, Dec 4, 2010 8.00am

Red Bull have a reputation for coming up with some pretty crazy bike-based events – think the Red Bull Rampage and the upcoming Mini Drone race. For their latest challenge, Gee Atherton found himself racing enduro motorbike champ David Knight down the Fort William downhill course in Scotland.

Atherton, the reigning World Cup champion, had the advantage of knowing the course well, having raced there dozens of times. But Knight, the current Enduro E3 world champion, had a four-stroke engine to power him across Aonach Mor.

So which won out? Pedal power or petrol power? Watch the clip below to find out:

  • This is awesome! You see Gee can beat cars aswell as bikes.

  • So how close was it? What were the times?

And how about a race back to the top.

  • Gee Atherton : 4.51

    David Knight : 4.56

Close race! (This same video on MPORA is showing the times in the video)

  • Two amazingly gifted riders.

Knighter however is in a class all of his own.

  • great video and good on gee. but you got to hand it to knight. i mean how many times has gee done that track compared to knight? i cant belive how quick he was on the rocks..would love to see what times they would do if they swapped bikes

  • looks a tight course for the enduro. knight would win after a few more goes.

  • Gee can go 30 seconds quicker than that in the dry. I'm also guessing that monster bike isn't too much affected by those slightly wet conditions either.

  • I think the Enduro boy needs a few more trys and maybe get the bike set up for the course (which Gee's guy's know well) and then have a face off, I think the KTM would then put in some very very fast times.

Anyone who has been to Fort William for the Friday, Sat and Sun would know how much time the guys put in getting the bikes set up, with tyre pressure, damping and spring weights, the KTM went in cold. The course is also set up for cycles not motorbikes and is very tight in places which plays against the motorbike.

All said and done though, it was good to see...

  • Great vid! Just hope the moto didn't rip up the trail too much.

  • wow - great race. I can't help but wonder though, if the much lighter and more agile 250cc dirty bike would bring the same outcome?

    Good vid though!

  • I can believe that neither of them is wearing a seatbelt in the van! Apart from being against the law in doesn’t give a great example to others who look up to these stars…

    LOL

roach 44, do you seriously think these guys are worried about hurting themselves?!?! and dont you think flying down the side of a mountain as fast as you can is setting a bad example??

I know its illegal but so is being drunk in public...

  • Knighter is immense.

  • Knighter would be taking Gee's bike if he knew the course as well as Gee. Still a brilliant video and both amazing at what they do. Nice one!

  • Bad Ass, Nice Challenge

  • What band is playing toward the end of the video during the visual head to head competition? IMO lighter weight has more advantage here as others speculated.

  • omg gee atherton is my idol just utterly speechles sick ride man!!!!!

  • Epic stuff from both riders, balls of titanium!!! haha cracking viewing, lovin' the wooden berm, serious hang time....

  • Great video, although Gee definitely had an advantage as he knows the track. Well done Knighter. You are a legend! Now it's time for Gee to compete on a World Enduro special test.
