Were they tough enough for Army Enduro event?

By Matthew Cole

The ‘Are you Tough Enough?’ mountain bike enduro took place last weekend at Porridgepot Hill, Surrey and the relaxed atmosphere, spot prizes and eight mile course proved a big hit with all riders.

The event, organised by the Army Cycling union, offered four-hour and two-hour solo categories over an eight mile loop with long climbs and lots of technical singletrack.

Simon Ernest of AW Cycles won the four-hour race with an impressive seven laps. Theresa Jackson of CC Luton took first place in the ladies’ competition. Andy Plewes of the Royal Marines dominated and won the Combined Services race with Nicola Macleod taking the women’s combined services title. Chris Minter of Pedalon.co.uk and Michelle Bergstrand of Police Sport UK took the two hour race honors.

Formula one driver Mark Webber riding for the Red Bull Racing team finished fifteenth with five laps over four hours. Full results here.

Army Rider Captain Adam Morris said: “The race started at 10.30am sharp with a blast from the horn and a melee of steel and flesh. Over £1000 worth of spot prizes meant that it was not only the winners that were rewarded for their efforts on the day and the smiles that were seen at the prize-giving and the feedback from the competitors suggested a well run event on a great course.”

  • Well done SimonK, sounds like a great event. As a rider whose enthusiasim far exceeds his abilities I like seeing everyone of whatever ability racing even if some of us will forever be back markers! Good luck for the future.

  • As an enthusiastic newbie , the time had come to lose my race virgin status and chose the "Are you tough enough ?" event at Porridgepot Hill as the place to do it.

I had no idea of what to expect , and was more than just a little concerned that my limited skills and middle age spread middle might not be up to the task.

With some relief and very tired limbs I completed the 2hr race and without cause for too much mbarrassment , although my use of language before some of the scarier strateches of singletrack may have shocked some of the much younger riders.

I have no point of reference , but I thought the event was a great success.

The course and organsiation were both excellent.

What I hadnt expected was how friendly the day was.

Especially tolerant and polite were the whippet framed racers to those of us who could never be mistaken for someone who could squeeze into the cockpit of an F1 car , despite our best effrorts to hold them up.

I am not sure if I earned the right to say "I was tough enough" , but I will for sure be signing up for for next years event to try again.
