As the global economy teeters on the brink of collapse and cyclists across the world tighten their purse strings, Wiggle has responded... by selling a £3,425 wheelset and £783 rear mech!

The online bike retailer will be the UK's only distributor of Lightweight Wheels products. The German carbon wheelsets are renowned for their high build quality and balance of stiffness, light weight, aerodynamics and durability.

Lightweights have been ridden by several Tour de France champions and will be used by the Focus Milram team in 2009. But they come at a price - ranging from £2,251.01 for the Standard III tubular wheelset to £3,425.45 for the top-of-the-range Obermayer III. We wonder how many announcements there will be at the Christmas table along the lines of "Sorry kids, the skiing holiday's cancelled this year."

Wiggle is also offering Lightweight's RD rear derailleur at £782.96, quick-release skewers at £78.30 and brake pads at £39.15. To mitigate the steep price per gram, it's offering a 10 percent discount in the run-up to Christmas and says it has plenty of stock.

  • They do credit you know?....hang on, isn't the easy availability of credit why we're in recession?

Heck, lets help these struggling retailers and spend spend spend!

And anyway, these are cheap compared to a set of Lew Racing hoops.
