World Series of Bicycling season begins on June 5

Pro track racing returns to Pennsylvania

Valley Preferred Cycling Center begins its 2009 World Series of Bicycling season June 5, as the popular Friday night professional racing series has a history of attracting the best cyclists from around the world.

The pre-season favourite continues to be Mertztown's Bobby Lea, who returns to Valley Preferred Cycling Center after competing in the Beijing Olympics last summer. However, Lea will be challenged by a rising group of American riders led by Lanell Rockmore and Shane Kline, as well as top international riders from Argentina, Australia, France, Germany and South Africa.

"The 2009 World Series of Bicycling is the premier bicycle racing series in North America, consistently drawing Olympians, world champions and national teams to Valley Preferred Cycling Center," said Marty Nothstein, executive director and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist. "In my racing career I competed all over the globe, and the World Series of Bicycling series is the best, bar none.

"Valley Preferred Cycling Center truly is the bicycle racing capitol of the world," he added.

The 2009 World Series of Bicycling season includes nine Friday night events, up from the seven-race slate in 2008. This year's schedule includes three events each in June, July and August:

  • June 5 - US 10 Mile Championships
  • June 12 - Rodale Festival of Speed
  • June 26 - Red Robin BRL All-Star Finals
  • July 10 - The Golden Wheel Race
  • July 17 - Keirin Cup
  • July 31 - Tandem National Championships
  • August 7 - Rodale US Sprint Gran Prix
  • August 14 - Air Products Finals
  • August 28 - Salamander Madison Cup

The June 5 opener features a 'Buy One, Get One' free promotion. All patrons have to do is buy one General Admission ticket, and they'll get one General Admission ticket for free. Plus, kids 12 and under are always free.

The savings do not stop at the gate.  Our Breakaway Cafe also features reduced prices for 2009.  This all makes a World Series of Bicycling event a great night out for the entire family.

According to organisers, gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the 2009 World Series of Bicycling are available by contacting Valley Preferred Cycling Center at (610) 395-7000, or through www.thevelodrome.com
