Stefano Zanini of Quickstep wins the first stage of the Tour of Britain in Manchester as team mate B
Quickstep veteran Stefano Zanini was the unexpected winner of the first stage of the 2004 Tour of Britain in Manchester this afternoon. The Italian Classics specialist sealed victory in a bunch sprint after a long-term breakaway, which at one point led the field by 18 minutes, was chased down by the peloton. But concerns over road safety were also expressed by some riders, including Zanini's team mate, Tom Boonen, who told procycling that racing conditions were, at times, "really dangerous." Heavy traffic, roadworks and the difficulty of policing a rolling road closure with a breakaway far ahead of the main field were thought to have caused problems as the convoy headed into Manchester; we will carry a more detailed report on today's opening stage later.
