Former National 50-mile Championship team winner Joel Wainman proved he is still a class act when he won the Ferryhill Wheelers’ 50-mile event over a tough course at Kirklevington, North Yorkshire, on Saturday.

Wainman was part of the winning trio in the title race in 1999 and 2001 when Pete Read Racing took the honours, and he showed he has lost little of his pace with a winning time of 1hr 51min 59sec in the Ferryhill event.

His time was fastest by 1-15 over Boneshakerbikes.com rider Steve Smales (1hr 53min 14sec), while 58-year-old veteran Lee Foster (Border City Wheelers) completed the podium with 1hr 55min 8sec for third.

Over the same distance, Congleton CC rider Neil Skellern took victory in the Cheshire Roads Club event on a course at Goostrey on Saturday.

Skellern sped round the sporting course in 1hr 55min 45sec to win by 1-12 from Warrington Road Club’s Alf Hilton, while Lancashire RC’s Paul Shallicker was two minutes slower with 1hr 58min 57sec.

Skellern’s time helped Congleton take the team prize, with colleagues Karl Austin and Edgar Reynolds clocking 2-03-55 and 2-27-11 respectively.

And not to be out-done, Lynne Skellern took the women’s prize with 2-28-30, while Jack Green was fastest junior, the Westmead Team 88 rider covering the distance in 2-04-16.

Third in his age group in the National 50 last weekend, Barry Charlton (Lyme Road Club) won the Leo Road Club 30-mile event at Newmarket, Suffolk.

Despite a strong headwind to the turn Charlton still managed to clock a time of 1hr 3min 22sec, good enough to take victory by just 22 seconds from former British Best All-Rounder Ian Cammish (Planet X) who covered the course in 1hr 3min 44sec, while Peter Balls (West Suffolk Wheelers) was third with 1-04-17.

There were also strong winds in Derbyshire, where Matlock CC staged their 25-mile event at Darley Dale on Sunday.

However, the conditions did not stop the promoting club’s Peter Colledge from breaking the course record with a time of 54min 53sec to win by 27 seconds from pre-race favourite Andy Proffitt (Arctic Premier RT), while Colledge’s team-mate Richard Cordin was third with 56min 21sec.

Belper BC rider David Wallwin covered the distance in 58min 4sec to record a new veterans course record, while Lynn Hamel also set a new women’s course record, her time of 1hr 1min 48sec giving the Green Room Group.com rider a comfortable victory.

Keith Coffey (Bec CC) won a shortened event at Holmwood, Surrey, on Sunday after roadworks on the A29 forced organisers of the Kingston Phoenix event to switch from a 15-mile event to just ten.

Coffey clocked 21min 21sec to win by 12 seconds from Sigma Sport RT rival Lee Turner. While third-placed Iain Brogden (Eastbourne Rovers CC) clocked 22min 17sec and helped his club take the team prize by just 16 seconds from the Lewes Wanderers trio.

And in Wales, David Crawley (Fibrax-Wrexham RC) won the Rhyl CC 25-mile event at Bodelwyddan, Clwyd, on Sunday, by just seven seconds from New Brighton CC rival Andrew Allan. Veteran Garry Brown (Equipe-Velo Ecosse) was third, just 24 seconds off the pace.
