Analysis by Jean-François Pescheux, Tour competition director: “The race speeds down to the Cote d’Azur, finally getting a sight of the Mediterranean from the top of the tricky Col de la Gineste, from which the route plunges 12 kilometres down into Marseille, where the finish is at the end of a long straight outside the Stade Vélodrome, home to the Olympique Marseille football team. The breakaway artists – they are usually in their element on stages into Marseille – and sprinters will want to take advantage of this stage after their struggles through the mountains. As we saw last year when Oscar Pereiro went clear on just such a stage, anything can happen on days like these. The team leaders will just be looking to their team-mates to keep them out of trouble.”
