Analysis by Jean-François Pescheux, Tour competition director: “From one stadium to another. After starting outside the Stade Vélodrome, the finish will be in front of the Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier. This is a flat stage alongside the Med. This second transitional stage between the two mountain ranges will be run off at a very hot pace and the heat, the wind and even the proximity of the sea could have an effect. The sprinters’ teams will want to keep things tight, while the breakaway specialists will want to show their jerseys. French riders have fared pretty well on stages like this in recent years, and we may see a home winner in Montpellier. Only the main contenders will be hiding themselves away in the peloton today as they wait for the time trial and the Pyrenees.”
