Vuelta 13: David Moncoutie takes mountain stage

Evans loses nearly two minutes to Valverde

French cyclist David Moncoutie (Cofidis) won stage 13 of the 2009 Vuelta a España, a 175km race from Berja to Sierra Nevada Saturday in Spain.

Overall race leader Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) finished third on the day, but gained nearly two minutes on former second place Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto).

Valverde tops the standings by 27 seconds from Dutch rider Robert Gesink, (Rabobank), 1:02 in front of Italy's Ivan Basso (Liquigas), and 1:23 ahead of Evans.

Moncoutie crossed the line alone having attacked three kilometres from the finish. He was 52 seconds ahead of Spain's Ezequiel Mosquera, of the Xacobeo team, while Valverde was 1:16 off the pace in third.

The race took its toll on Saturday with 10 riders pulling out, including Belgian star Tom Boonen and Spain's Oscar Freire.

On Sunday, the race faces its last stage in the mountains with a finish at Sierra de La Pandera.
