The 2009 Crocodile Trophy got off to a bang Tuesday, as Swiss rider Urs Huber (Team Schöckli-Craft) and Monique Zeldenrust set the tone with commanding victories in the men's and women's 98km elite race between Cairns and Lake Tinaroo on stage one.
Riders tackled 2,500 metres of climbing on the day.
Huber beat Dutchman Bart Brentjens (Trek-Brentjens MTB Racing Team) by two minutes, two seconds to take the overall lead. Zeldenrust finished the women's race more than 22 minutes in front of second-place Lisa Pleyer (Roadbike Holidays - KTM).
In other racing, Austrian Raimund Burböck won the master's men 1 race in by 04:08 over Australian Isaac Tonello, while Dutchman Jesse Hovestreijdt won the master's men 2 race.
The Dream Team took first place in the team category, besting Tropical Tablelands Discovery by 21:56.
Stage two takes the racers 171km from Lake Tinaroo to Granite Gorge, with 1,250 metres of climbing on the docket.
