Will Armstrong use this time trial Madone back-up instead of the Equinox tomorrow?

  • Custom painted bikes have become the norm for Armstrong in 2009.
  • Lance Armstrong's (Astana) Trek Equinox TTX was painted by artist Kenny Scharf.
  • The Equinox TTX's hourglass-shaped head tube allows for the stiffness of a 1 1/8
  • The top tube is level to reduce frontal area but also broad for good torsional stiffness through the front triangle.
  • The Equinox TTX reverses the trend of road bikes with its deep aero seat stays and slender chain stays.
  • Armstrong hopes to be moving as far as this little guy come Thursday's individual time trial.
  • Armstrong has historically been very careful in choosing wheels so it remains to be seen what will be mounted come race day. For now, a HED H3 is fitted up front…
  • …while a deeper HED H3D is installed out back. Armstrong also has a rear disc wheel painted to match the rest of the bike though it's not pictured here.
  • Armstrong's Bontrager aero bars are still in the prototype phase.
  • The extensions use a slight double bend to bring Armstrong's hands a bit higher up.
  • The carbon extensions are held in place by a simple single-bolt clamp.
  • SRAM have provided Armstrong with a special set of their 1090-R2C shifters complete with bulbous levers instead of the usual flat bits.
  • A giant 55T outer chainring is installed on the SRAM Red crankset.
  • A SRAM Red rear derailleur is fitted out back.
  • Trek's Bat Cage isn't the sexiest one in their lineup but it's light and holds on tight.
  • Armstrong's usual Selle San Marco Concor Lite saddle is trimmed down a bit here in order to satisfy UCI guidelines for setback.
  • The SRAM Red group is punctuated by a Shimano Dura-Ace chain.
