Many cyclists like to share their bike-based exploits via photography, and Instagram is one of the fastest growing tools for doing just that.
Beyond the selfies, sunsets and over-use of hashtags, there’s a wealth of spectacular images showcasing the glamorous lives of people involved in the sport.
If you’re a road cycling fan, here are five feeds you need to follow:
Tim de Waele – @tdwsport
Whether the idea of traveling around the world shooting the pro-peloton appeals to you or not, it’s the life that Belgian photographer, Tim de Waele lives. His feed is an online documentary of what happens behind the scenes at race events, and offers an insight that only a chosen few get to see. If you’ve had enough of square pictures, check out the rest of his work at TDWsport.com.
Chris Froome – @chrisfroome
There are many pro cyclists on Instagram, but one definitely worth following is Chris Froome.Life aboard the Team Sky bus, exotic locations and the odd selfie; Froome’s account is inspirational on the whole, but at times it gets a little… ‘interesting’.
Turns out Froome-dog is actually a ‘cat-person’ and his feline friend often appears with him for that authentic Bond villain look – when you’re done, check out the fluffy, white FroomeCat on very his own account… @froomecat.
Pro Cycling Trumps – @procyclingtrumps
Everyone loves a game of top trumps, right? How about pro cycling trumps? This feed constantly updates the cards with new riders, characterised in a unique style. OK, so it’s not going to show you parts of the world you haven't seen, or what goes on in a team bus, but it is worth a look if you’re bored on a commute.
On The Back Foot – @onthebackfoot
For a look back to days past when cycling was a simpler sport, powered by steak and alcohol, take a look at On The Back Foot. Harking back to a time before mobile-phone based photo-sharing, the feed is awash with faded or black and white images of cycling’s rich and diverse past.
Taylor Phinney – @taylorphinney
With his boyish good looks, negligible body-fat percentage and architectural haircut, you’d be forgiven mistaking Taylor Phinney for some kind of Bieber-esque pop star - but you’d be wrong… and he has the scars to prove it.
As far as pro cycling Instagram accounts go, Taylor’s mix of around-the-world sights, local culinary offerings and life on the pro scene make him well worth a follow. And we’ve got to give it to the guy, his photos aren’t bad either…
