"Wind, waterproof and breathable, but others do it cheaper"

By Dan Joyce

The Nickel is a polyurethane-coated nylon jacket with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment. Like most such jackets, it's waterproof, windproof and kind of breathable. To assist heat transfer there are two vents on the back, near the shoulderblades.

A mesh inner helps prevent clamminess, while a fleecy collar greatly improves winter comfort. Hem and collar are draw-corded and there's reflective piping down the arms, back and sides. The front zip has a storm flap and the cuffs have Velcro tabs.

The back of the jacket has a tab that you could use for an LED light, and there's a reflective logo nearby. In low light conditions, the yellow version is brilliantly day-glo. There's one pocket, an inner one on the chest, which the jacket will pack into. All in all, apart from maybe a rear pocket, it covers all the bases for commuting, day-riding and touring. The only downside is the price: the Altura Nevis does all this for £15 less, while the Gill Ventilator is £20 cheaper. At this price point, that's an issue. It's machine washable.
