"It’s what a race shoe should be, but a bit on the pricey side"

The PRO is the response from Pearl Izumi to their pro racers’ demands for a lighter, stiffer but more comfortable shoe.

Lightness is achieved through the use of thin synthetic materials which are both tough, easy to clean and resistant to water, and stiffness comes from using a full length carbon fibre mid sole and a TPU plastic moulded roll-cage to hold the foot firmly through the pedal stroke and also add a degree of protection.

The shoes are immediately comfortable thanks to a padded collar, thin ergo footbed and smooth, seam-free inner surface.

The micro buckle and twin straps cinch down for a precise fit and the open angled blade shape treads are the perfect depth for Shimano SPD cleat engagement.

We’ve no complaints about their fault-free performance or durability so far, but the pricing is looking steep next to comparable models from Specialized and Shimano.

Sizing on the Pearl Izumi shoes comes up very small – you’ll need at least a size larger than you normally take, more so if you like plenty of toe room.

The angled blade treads are good at finding traction in the dirt, but are not so hot at dealing with hard, wet surfaces.
