Lake CX401 road shoes £349.99

Road bike shoes made of kangaroo leather

BikeRadar score4/5

Lake’s Custom Fit Carbon sole extends part way up each side of the CX401 shoes, and most of the heel is a rigid tub. The uppers combine tough but supple K-Lite kangaroo leather and mesh, and a single Velcro strap crosses a Boa lacing system. Sturdy rubber bumpers protect the toe, heel and outer foot, and the heel pad is replaceable.

Available in three widths, the CX401s are heat-mouldable in the oven. As with any such shoes, it might take several attempts to get them just right. The rounded toe is very spacious, even for wide feet, the heel counter is snug, and the soles offer great arch support.

The Boa steel wire lacing system, with six guides, fastens your foot securely, and a push/pull knob on the outside gives rapid micro-adjustment or releases with just a small finger-pull. The sole accepts standard three-point fixing cleats, but a Speedplay-specific version is available too.

The wraparound carbon base becomes a rigid extension of your foot when properly moulded, and the excellent arch support minimises movement, making the CX401s superbly efficient with no noticeable flex. Although well-upholstered, a pair of 45s weigh only 634g, which is no hindrance at all.
