BikeRadar verdict

35 out of 5 stars

"Good value and quality entry-level option that just lack a lace tab."

By BikeRadar

Shimano's entry-level offering has seen a cosmetic revamp for 2006. The uppers are split leather and nylon mesh. The tongue is more padded than the MT40 so is more prone to holding water, though it is comfortable.

It's a nice low cut around the ankle and heel for easy flexing but unfortunately there's nowhere to tuck away the laces, though they are quite short.

The sole unit is the same as the MT40 but the outsole lugs aren't as deep - good for even surfaces and they gather less muck, but don't grip as well off-road. When riding, the shoes feel comfortably stiff, and the heel is held securely in the back. Conservatively styled, they don't look out of place off the bike either. There's a reflective tab on the back, with a high toe bumper that resists scuffs well - particularly useful if you use toe clips.

Manufacturers description

Entry level SPD shoe which is as comfortable for pedalling as it is for walking: a great choice for recreational leisure riding and commuting
