Kenda Small Block 8 DTC 2.35In | $43.74
BikeRadar verdict
"A fantastic tyre for man-made trails and surprisingly good off-piste, too"
This fast-rolling, micro-grip tyre was designed by racing legend John Tomac, and it’s an outstanding performer, particularly if you ride ‘kitty litter’ trails. It brings excellent rolling speed, dry grip and useful protection to the off-road party but does have a tendency to get clogged or washy in the wet stuff.
This is the tyre to get if you want a fast, tough tyre for rocky/gritty summer trails. It's fantastic for man-made trails and surprisingly good off-piste,too.
The tread carpet of little Nevegal-style blocks provides widespread loads and a very high rolling speed, particularly on harder surfaces. It wraps right over to the edge of the tyre, too, so it dips into corners and rips round with no loss of speed or sudden change in feel.
The multiple contact points and softer DTC (Dual Tread Compound) shoulders give excellent adhesion on hard and loose surfaces alike, and the Kenda is surprisingly tenacious across wet roots and other tree-related trauma.
The amount of rubber on the ground makes it better defended against point punctures than most tyres, yet it’s still light for its generously fat carcass.
The only real Achilles heel of the Small Block is that the tread can get clogged up by cloying mud, but it still clears faster than similar tyres, and acceleration on the dry bits between is ample payback.
Price is below average for above-average performance, too.
