"Powerful puncture resistance, but needs more cornering ability"

By Paul Vincent

The Kaliente L3R Pro features their unique Iron Cloak technology, which they claim provides the ultimate puncture resistance with its aramid casing - and what's more, it actually seems to work.

Although Kenda also make a lighter version of this tyre, without the Iron Cloak protection (at 197g), we think it's worth the weight penalty, as the L3R was devoid of punctures throughout our entire testing period.

While the Kaliente L3R Pro tyres can be fitted easily without tyre levers, the usual cautions apply to ensure that the bead has seated properly during inflation.

Like the Gommitalia, Vittoria and Criterium Open, the tread is thin but lays a broad footprint on the road, so they don't wear as rapidly as expected. The broad footprint also means more traction while the thin tread means less rolling resistance. Cornering grip is good but not the best. The tyres roll most effectively at 125psi.
