"Tough and fairly fast for a training tyre - not ideal for racing"

By Dan Joyce

"The Mondo road tyre was carefully engineered to be the fastest race clincher in the world" according to Specialized's marketing blurb.

In fact, it was the slowest rolling tyre here by a clear margin. In fairness, this is the cheapest tyre on test, and the more expensive (£30) Mondo S-Works would undoubtedly have done a bit better. The 120tpi casing is par for the course and not excessively heavy, so we're guessing that the reason for the slower rolling is the rubber compound or the 'flak jacket' Kevlar sub-tread. This provides very good puncture resistance, making this a reliable training tyre. The angular shoulder of the tread is odd but didn't cause any upsets while cornering during the test.
