Vredestein S.Licks
BikeRadar verdict
"A pioneering, smooth rolling, slick street tyre, now faced with stiff competition, but still a class act"
Once upon a time, S.Licks was the only name you needed to know when buying 26in slicks. Today other tyres have gained ground while the S.Licks hasn't changed.
Yet it remains a good street tyre. It rolls well, rather like the Marathon Racer. The harder rubber sub-tread - Vredestein's PRS puncture protection system - gives puncture protection that's not quite on a par with the Marathon Racer but that's as good as the Michelin XCR Road and the Gatorskin. As with most skinwalls, the sidewalls make the tyre more supple but pierce easily. There are no special sidewall features like reflectives or dynamo tracks. However, the S.Licks is available in a good range of solid colours to coordinate with your bike. The bead is Kevlar, which saves weight. It's cheaper than the Marathon Racer or the Michelin XCR Road, which, as it's as fast and nearly as tough, makes it good value.
