"Impressively light and outstanding value for money"

By Paul Vincent

Our test pair of Shimano's new RS20 road wheels has remained perfectly true for about three weeks, during which we took them round a cyclocross course and on the daily 36-mile commute. We fully expect them to provide years of trouble-free service.

The RS20 wheels are pitched at the same level as its 105 road components. The ball bearing hubs are easy to re-grease, and the cassette body is compatible with 8, 9 and 10-speed Shimano cassettes. The RS20s are available in either black or silver with stylish new red, white and black graphics.

Shimano has moved away from more radical wheel designs in the last couple of years, first abandoning paired spoking and with its 2008 wheels moving the nipples back to the rim where they are a lot easier to get at than those of previous designs.

The offset drillings in the rim aren't a new idea but make for a more even tension between the rear wheel's left and right hand spokes. The rim also has a wear line indicator in the braking surface, to show when the rim needs replacing.
