Bontrager Select Aero
BikeRadar verdict
"Not as light as they look, but stable at speed and true both out of the box and after a fair amount of use."
With 30mm deep semi-aero rims, a low spoke count (20 front, 20 rear) and good looking hubs, these Bontys appear lighter than they are.
The rims are welded at the joint, then machined for a smooth braking surface. The spokes are double butted and the nipples are of the locking variety. Most of the weight is in the rims making for sluggish acceleration.
The plus side is huge stability at speed, but at the expense of the nice quick handling you get with lighter rims. The bearings felt slightly rough when new, and haven't got smoother.
The rear wheel has an off-centre spoke bed, which reduces dishing to try and even out the spoke tension from drive to non-drive side. Out of the box they were very straight, and have remained so.
