Alessandro Petacchi wins Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen
Alessandro Petacchi took his first win in Belgium by out-sprinting his competition in the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen Wednesday.
The LPR Brakes rider kept his nose in front of a massive crash that saw favourites Robbie McEwen (Katusha) and Greg Van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto) come down in the final 100 metres.
"I have never won in Belgium, I had a third in Gent-Wevelgem," Petacchi said. "I thought that it might not be possible to win today because I lost Alberto Ongarato and Lorenzo Bernucci was in the escape."
Kenny Van Hummel (Skil-Shimano), Dominique Rollin (Cervélo TestTeam) and Antonio Cruz (BMC Racing Team) took second through fourth.
