Amy Winehouse's father-in-law paralysed after bike crash

By BikeRadar

Singing star Amy Winehouse is said to be "deeply shocked and upset" after her father-in-law was injured in a cycling crash, according to entertainment websites.

Lance Fielder, father of Winehouse’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil, was training near his home in Leicestershire, England when he crashed and reportedly lay in a ditch for three hours before being found.

The 67-year-old was air-lifted to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he underwent emergency surgery on for a spinal injury.

Lance Fielder’s wife Jane said, "At the moment, he’s paralysed but it is too early to say if he will be permanently paralysed. I was really worried. After calling the police I went out looking for him. By sheer fluke a lady in a tractor had seen his bicycle and spotted him lying in a ditch."

The crash is another blow for the troubled couple. Amy Winehouse's problems with alcohol and drugs have been widely reported, while Blake Fielder-Civil is currently in Pentonville Prison, London, awaiting trial on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

  • Thousands of people are knocked off their bikes every week i'm sure. But this makes it onto Bikeradar because he's related to a pop-star?

Surely this is Tabloid journalism, and has no real place on this site?

It is indeed sad, but holds no real significance on this site, other than he was on a bike.

  • Agreed. Its sad but why is this considered newsworthy?

  • 'course it's newsworthy regardless of who. It adds weight on both sides - cycling ain't risk-free and maybe cyclists need protection (depending on how the accident happened). And regardless of whether you're a tabloid snob or sniffy about celebs; using their names for publicity is a fact of life and often serves the cycling community well - just look at B oris...(heck I think I've just disproved my own theory :( ) Anyway I wish him a speedy recovery (and yes all the nameless unworthy cyclists currently recovering too).

  • Amy Winehouse sure is having a troubled life these days with that side of her family. Oh well. I have to say that Jay is right, this isn't really relevant to bike riding other than the fact the guy was riding a bicycle. Hopefully he's alright and Winehouse can weather this storm of a life she is currently on.
