Eurobike 2014 - Viva Italia!

Take a gander at a wealth of Italian machines from the halls of Eurobike

Eurobike may be held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, but it's also a prime showcase for some of the best that top-end Italian companies have to offer – and in fact, there's an entire building set aside just for them. Here are some highlights that caught our eye today.

Colnago's 60th-anniversary C60 is a thing of beauty

Colnago is celebrating its 60th anniversary in the most natural way possible: by releasing a limited edition of its top-end C60 flagship. Each one – just 60 in total – will come only in an exclusive matte silver and black finish complete with etched and numbered titanium plates and built with Campagnolo's latest Super Record group. These special C60s will also feature direct-mount brakes both front and rear – a configuration Colnago says won't be offered in inline models.

As for the price… well, you know the saying.

De Rosa Protos

The general theme of De Rosa's new carbon fibre Protos road racer can be summed up on one word: big – as in absolutely humungous tube cross-sections. The squared-off down tube, for example, is roughly the same diameter as a standard water bottle. According to De Rosa, this yields a stiffness-to-weight ratio that's supposedly 35 percent better than "traditional competition racing bikes".

Seriously, these tubes are absolutely enormous

Also new is a revamped King XS, which gains direct-mount brake callipers and a new rear brake location underneath the chain stays. As with other companies that have opted for this layout, De Rosa claims that this produces better braking since the chain stays are so well reinforced, plus a smoother ride as the seat stays can now be made thinner and more flexible.

The 2015 de rosa king xs sheds some weight but gains a new brake configuration with direct-mount calipers front and rear, too. the rear brake is now located below the chain stays: the 2015 de rosa king xs sheds some weight but gains a new brake configuration with direct-mount calipers front and rear, too. the rear brake is now located below the chain stays

Revised brake calliper mounts yield a significant reshaping of the De Rosa King XS

Cinelli Laser Mia

Cinelli did a limited reproduction of its classic steel Laser road bike back in 2011 that faithfully adhered to the original's aesthetic but with more modern steel alloys. Now, Cinelli has remade the Laser once again – but now in carbon fibre.

The new Cinelli Laser Mia looks like the original but this one is carbon fibre

This new Laser Mia bears similar lines, including the curve behind the head tube and the slight profiling behind the seat tube, and of course, the same baby blue finish. Building this latest iteration in carbon fibre provides obvious weight benefits; Cinelli claims a Laser Mia frame weighs just 890g.

Dedacciai Strada Atleta and Ran DB

Dedacciai Strada – the frame division of component maker Dedacciai – had two particularly interesting new releases in its Eurobike booth. The Atleta marks the company's entry into the aero road bike market with deep-profile down tube, seat tube, seatpost, and fork blades, plus a relatively well blended fork crown and wedge-type integrated seatpost binder. Claimed weight for a painted medium frame is 980g.

Also fresh is a disc brake version of its more stiffness and weight-focused Ran. The new Ran DB uses essentially the same exterior shape as the standard Ran but with post mount calliper tabs front and rear and a reinforced carbon lay-up to withstand the additional forces. Claimed frame weight is 950g – a gain of 160g over the rim brake version.
