Nicolai helps design £5,200 electric bike
A German designer has developed a €5,877 (approx £5,200/US$8,750) electric bike with help from Karl-Heinz Nicolai, who's more famous for his full-suspension mountain bikes.
Grace is billed as the 'world's first street legal e-motorbike'. It has two rear hub-mounted motors, powered by lithium ion batteries stored inside the frame, that produce 1,300w and can propel it at up to 45km/h (28mph).
It still has pedals and a chain, but designer Michael Hecken says that to ride it in the EU you'll need to wear a helmet and have motor liability insurance.
To comply with EU regulations, Grace has certified electric engines, brakes, tyres, headlights, rear light, brake light and horn. It's only specced with motors up to 48v. However, in theory you could bump the voltage up to 96v which would give you a top speed of 70km/h (43mph).

The frame is hand-made at Nicolai's factory in Lubbrechtsen from aircraft grade 7020 and 7005 aluminium. The massively oversized tubes (the down tube is 78mm in diameter) contain all the cables and the bike's Energy Storage System Module (ESSM) – 60 Li-ion cells arranged into five stacks.
Three different frames designs are available – Race, City or Universal – and there's a choice of three different motors – Sport, Flat or Mountain. Prices start at €5,877 (approx £5,200/US$8,750). Buyers can choose between 67 powder coated or anodised colours. For more details, see www.grace.de, or check out the video below.

I don't quite get what makes it more legal than anything else out there...

Great idea. Fantastic looking (but then I like TT bikes). Also completely useless. There's no way I'd have one of these. Exactly the kind of thing my dad would love.

PissedOffCil - I think it's due to the size of the engine. E-bikes and pedelecs normally have up to 500W - this has 1,300W. Because of that it's classed as an e-motorbike and has to comply with stricter regulations in the EU.

Another classic example of the maxim - "'Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should"
Why not just get a motorbike? - cheaper and more suited to the purpose!

It's neither a bike nor a motorbike. Nothing wrong with innovation and if it finds a market, good luck to it.
If most car-driving commuters switched to one of these, the roads might be less crowded. And perhaps even a little more dangerous. See how that twunt in the video was riding?
Please please please don't let this be the next teenager craze, though. It's bad enough that they ride around on those awful Peugeot scooters. At least you can hear those coming, though.

I like it, it looks like something the A-Team would have built in a shed!

Whats the standover height on it?! Every time that you came to a halt you'd have to get off it! (or at least i would - that top tub looks about 36" high) It's strange how if Nicolai have helped that they didn't once mention that the proportions are just all wrong.
Also, does it run quiet? - as i have quite a lot of problems with pepole walking out in front of me when ocasionally commuting as they don't hear me cycling past, i wouldn't want this at 28mph let alone 43mph!

And you'd have thought a proper bike designer would have had the sense to put all the plug sockets somewhere other than in the path of the all the front wheel crud...
For the money that gets you a nice road bike AND a nice second hand motorbike...

I could think of a better bike to spend over 5 grand on, then again i'm a cyclist and it's not aimed at me. Possible for people in suits and bowler hats

Presumably the batteries will also power speakers that make motorbike noises to warn of its high speed approach ;-)

I just don't get it.
It's shaped like a bike but it's a motor bike - and a very expensive one at that.
It's the same concept as a Sinclair C5 and we all know what happened to that.

bobpzero - last time i checked the UK is part of the EU - and it is not law to ride with a helmet. I wish people didnt have the bring this stupid topic up everytime they see even the slightyest opportunity - its about an E-bike.
I think the concept is good, the bike lookes sharp and looks fun to ride. Is it needed? i ont think so. Plus when the batteries are worn down - where do they go? Im guessing folk who would buy this wouldn't think - ah yes, a good investment for the next 20years and it'll have a great re-sale value.
I think people tend to forget this point. Its not environmentally friendly if you then buy the next new product a year later because of your fashion insecurities.
I think the fact it still has a chain and sprockets says alot - i may not be able to reach 28mph too often on the flats - but i can get damn close with just my legs - and plus, who does in a city centre?

I actually really want one of these- I think it looks like great fun! However, I wouldn't spend over 5 grand on it, and can't really see who would.

love it, seen something very similar a while back but was geared much higher and was capable of over 50mph, it was so powerful that it was capable of out accelerating regular traffic. i feel that it has great potential in the future when battery technology will give it much greater range (of a few hundred miles) and much shorter charge times. i see the creation of new sports and look forward to the day when a "mtb" can be riden off road up steep hills in excess of 30mph and come down even faster on the other side.

weirdly I think it looks cool, it doesn't use petrol so that's going to save money and I would use this to get from one side of London to the other because its quickest by bike but would be even quicker by a "powered" bike.
I think this is ideal for people who don't have a shower at work but still want to "cycle" there with out getting sweaty.

I like it - in concept
It does look goofy as hell but then lots of Nicolai's have that Marmite appeal.
Changing some of the bits like the SH** saddle and the lights, would help.
I've gotlights that look much neater and smaller than those projector units and mine still pump out 1000 lumens - imagine the setup you could run with all that Juice.
I'd buy one - but it's 5K for a Hard tail.
I'd want a full sus-er especially on the potholed streets of Londinium 100mm would do it.
TBH I'd rather get a kit which included the big motors and battery with the throttle thingy and build it into a bike, which I'd modded up. Hmmm

Sorry Guys, but most of your statements are so poor I can not believe it.
There is some people that build by far the coolest ebike on the planet and all you idiots talk about is a saddle you don`t like. And stupid mudguards you can buy for a 10er in every bikes store. Also why should a modell in a Video wear a stupid helmet?
This is a very cool piece of engeneering, no batteries outside, no cables, no nothing and the whole thing is street legal as well, ecological etc. Its way in front of anything you can buy on the market.
What the f*** are you idiots talking about, there is something new on the planet and you sound like my old grandma.
1300 Watts will be a lot of fun, I`d drive it with a bike helmet, and 6000 Euros is about 120 Euros on a finance sceme at my local lloyds bank over 4 years. My father puts that into his merc; per week easily.
I don`t know, If these germans sell enough, the price will drop. If this bike goes into the market in 2 years for 3000 Euros, they probably sell thousands of them.
I think this machine rocks, and you guys are just conservative old ......
In Dubai, were I was born, people will love this bike, they love quality.
You should all buy some more chinese bikes, and the last employee in England can switch the light off...
