Surly Straggler cyclocross bike - Eurobike 2013

Disc-specific version of Cross-Check

The latest addition to Surly’s range is the all-new Straggler cyclocross bike (£1,599.99 complete/£399.99 frameset, US prices TBC). BikeRadar got a look at the new model at Eurobike 2013, where Surly explained that a huge number of customers were asking for a disc-specific version of their versatile and popular Cross-Check.

The frame is designed to take up to 160mm rotors front and rear and, with horizontal sliding dropouts and the FFF (Fatties Fit Fine) design allowing for massive 42mm tyres, we reckon you could fit a 29er cross-country tyre at a push.

Like the Cross-Check, the Straggler has front and rear mudguard mounts as standard, as well as options for racks and, unlike most cyclocross bikes, two bottle cages. The burly double-butted frame is coated for rust resistance and, being 4130 chromoly steel, should be tough. Frame weight is a claimed 2.27kg (5lb) and the fork sits at 2.3lb (1,050g).

The Surly Straggler has all the braze-ons you’ll ever need

The Straggler complete bike will feature Shimano Tiagra mated to a CX50 chainset and CX70 front mech, with Avid’s BB7 brakes stopping a set of disc-specific Alex wheels.

The bike is available in an understated ‘Closet Black’ or, our favourite, this retro purple ‘Glitter Dreams’ finish. For more information see www.surlybikes.com.
