Tirreno-Adriatico 5: Andreas Klöden triumphs against the clock

Astana rider becomes new leader

Germany's Andreas Klöden won the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race on Sunday topping a 30-kilometre individual time-trial between Loreto and Macerata ahead of Stijn Devolder of Belgium and Sweden's Thomas Lövkvist.

Klöden, the winner in 2007, also took the overall lead in the week-long race which concludes on Tuesday.

He leads Lövkvist by six seconds but with two stages remaining more suitable to sprint finishes, the German looks set to repeat his victory of two years ago.

Previous leader Joaquin Rodriguez of Caisse d'Epargne, a specialist climber, finished well down on the day in 44th position almost three minutes back and fell out of the running for overall victory.

Former Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso of Liquigas, back from a two-year doping suspension, finished in 19th on the stage and moved up to eighth overall.

Monday's sixth stage is over 235km from Civitanova Marche to Camerino.
