Troy Lee Designs prototype D3 helmet - spotted

Additional external EPS layer being tested

Troy Lee Designs are currently testing what could become an important new development in helmet technology. Spotted on the head of freeride legend Cameron Zink at this week's Red Bull rampage event, was a prototype D3 full-face helmet that uses an additional external EPS foam sections.

The prototype lid has strategically placed layers of EPS foam at the side and top of its outer shell, both being common impact areas. The EPS is used to further increase impact absorption over a conventional helmet design. It works too – Troy Lee have announced they will be continuing development of this technology after testing showed a 'dramatic increase in impact absorbtion'.

Fortunately Zink did not go on to put this new technology to the test, instead he took the best trick award for a phenomenal and record breaking 78ft backflip.
