13 UK cities will be traffic free for cyclists this summer
If you’re looking for somewhere safe and traffic-free to take any new cyclists you’re encouraging to get on their bikes for Get Britain Riding, then how about one of 13 major UK cities? Thanks to British Cycling and HSBC UK, major conurbations will become the perfect places to ride this summer.
This Sunday, 11 June, Birmingham sees the first HSBC City Ride with roads closed to cars for family friendly, traffic-free riding, and British Cycling claims it will be the first step towards its ambition to get two million people on bikes by 2020. All of the HSBC City Rides are completely free to enter.
Cycling can be the solution to so many problems in this country
Following the Birmingham event, the rides will roll out to other cities including Manchester, Newcastle, Cardiff and Glasgow with the last event of 2017 in Liverpool on 24 September.
“We want everyone to relive the freedom and thrill that comes when you get on a bike,” says six-time Olympic champion and British Cycling ambassador Sir Chris Hoy. “They’ll ensure that thousands of people across the UK get the chance to enjoy cycling through their city on traffic-free roads, inspiring them to make cycling part of their everyday lives. By opening up the roads of some of our biggest cities, we want to demonstrate the change and benefits that can come from having cities with fewer cars and more bikes.”

“Our partnership with British Cycling is all about ensuring that anyone, anywhere in the UK has the opportunity and inspiration to get on their bike, whether that is for travel, fitness or fun,” explains Giles Morgan, HSBC’s Global Head of Sponsorship. “Over the next eight years we will work with British Cycling to embed cycling into communities up and down the country and inspire two million people to get on their bikes.
“We know that more people cycling will lead to a healthier, greener, happier nation, making a significant impact on issues such as obesity, depression and pollution. Cycling can be the solution to so many problems in this country and HSBC UK City Rides is the first step on that journey.”
