Team Cycling Plus will be updating you each week with the highs and lows of their training as part of the team. Coach Ben lets us know if the team are sticking to their allocated training...
Coach: Ben Simmons
Ben Simmons runs Elite Wales and his sponsored by Wiggle. He has been enlisted by Cycling Plus to ensure our team of riders are on top form for their cycling season and are able to achieve their goals.
The four Team Cycling Plus riders have now completed their second week of prescribed training and it has been a mixture highs and lows.
Andy has had a good week of training and has managed to almost complete all the prescribed training which is fantastic. Andy has also had a good go at including interval and sprints as set in the training program. This suggests that this level of training is appropriate to his busy schedule and I will look to keep a similar pattern for the next few weeks.
Kay has struggled to find the time to train last week which is understandable with a hectic lifestyle. My next step is to work with Kay and see how we can fit in some quality training around her lifestyle and her running and swimming commitments. Like Kay mentioned in her blog she is a tri-athlete, and as I am a cycling coach I am going to be biased to putting in more time on the bike. I think we will have to come to a compromise for the next few weeks prescribed training.
Malcolm has also struggled to find the time to train last week with various other things going on in his life. Malcolm has had a lot of family commitments which he has rightly prioritised as more important than his training. Malcolm has now sorted himself out with a commuting bike so hopefully can get a few more rides in riding to and from work.
Sam has had a busy week studying for his professional chartership exam but has still managed to get in some good rides. His data has shown that he is feeling tired and this could be a combination of training and stress from his other commitments. I think Sam should have a few days off to let his body recover both physically and mentally before getting back in to the routine of training. I’m sure once the exam is over he will be more relaxed and have more time to enjoy his cycling!
Before prescribing the next few weeks of training I will be discussing individually how they have found their current program and look for ideas or ways of slotting training in to their schedules with out causing a negative effect on their work or family. It is a fine balance but can be achieved with realistic goals and correct motivation
I am in a similar situation trying to squeeze in my training around my work commitments so I know how the riders are feeling. I did manage to get 2nd place in the Abergavenny Handicap Road Race on the weekend even with my lack of training. So this goes to show that good results can be achieved with a minimal amount of focused training.
