The WMB team (and a few of the MBUK lot, the Cycling Plus team, some of the bike mag web boys, and a couple of management types) went on an XMAS ride/meal/booze up yesterday. After wrapping up with wooly hats instead of helmets, thick shorts, leggings, three-quarters and MTB mitts and other thermal clothes to beat off the winter chill, we all cruised out to a lovely super-bike-friendly pub, The Lock Inn (www.thelockinn.co.uk) in Bradford-upon-Avon along the canal path from Bath. It's about a 30 minute ride depending on your sense of urgency to buy the first round... I see now why Robin - who's usually spinning along at speeds around 245mph - was pottering along at the back!
We were on a random bunch of bikes indeed from road bikes with wooden rims (seriously!) to freeride bikes (MBUK) to race XC bikes to hybrids to heavy budget hardtails â yet we arrived warmed up and ready for a feast of festive food. Three minutes later, full and satisfied, and slightly warmer still after shedding some layers, we got down to the serious business of drinking the bar dry. Several hours later the numbers had dwindled as various lightweights made their excuses and shirked buying rounds, but this left a determined set of cyclists to continue boozing in the good name of WMB/MBUK/C+ and tell tall stories, er, or my case â break into song. Who doesnât like a bit of Dean Martin-style âLet It Snow, Let It Snowâ? Apparently, everyone around me as I was heckled plenty!
Overall it was a great 'bonding' (er, biking, er, boozing) session and was fab to chat to all the different bike teams about this, that and the other. I think my beer coat was working wonders to fight off the bitter cold around mid-evening when we wobbled back along the canal path in the wintry darkness with a fading light to lead the way⦠but that could've been because I was too busy singing Christmas songs on the way home with Neil from Cycling Plus to worry about the -23 degree temperatures.
In case we forget to tell you next time, Merry Christmas and all the rest of it from all at WMB.
