Mountain bike road trip!

The remedy for the winter blues

Winter here in Colorado has been particularly rough this year and more like the mid-western climate I left behind almost exactly four years ago.  Instead of our usual moderate temperatures and copious amounts of sunshine interspersed with (very) brief periods of snow and clouds, it’s been lots of snow, lots of clouds, and lots of cold.

Needless to say, it hasn’t exactly made for the best riding weather and whereas I was riding on the road in arm and knee warmers at 10,000ft in mid-January last year, I’ve barely ridden ten times this calendar year – and forget about trail riding.

Time for a road trip.

So down south my girlfriend and I went with bikes in tow, bags and test gear packed, and our new dog in the back of the car with sights set on Arizona and the guest room of regular Cyclingnews race photographer extraordinaire Jonathan Devich.

We didn’t manage to escape the snow completely, though – who’d have thought that northern Arizona mountains got pounded with snow in March?  But after thirteen hours of driving (good thing I installed that new stereo), we’re now in sun, warmth, and endless expanses of dry trails.

Now all I have to do is pull myself away from the lounge chairs by the side of the pool but at least now I have the option of riding.  After a few days here we’ll move on to a few mountain bike hot spots in Nevada and Utah before taking the long way back to Boulder through western Colorado.

Gotta go – riding awaits.
