Friends of two young mountain bikers killed in a car crash are planning a special ride in their memory.
The news came too late for us to get it in the latest edition of Mountain Biking UK, so we thought we’d give the event a plug on our blog – it’s the least we could do.
Ben Ineson, 18, and Tom Rodgers, 21, died when Tom’s car came off the road and hit a wall on January 14.
Ben, from Langcliffe, North Yorkshire, had recently been signed up to ride for the Astrix Europe team, and had previously ridden for All Terrain Cycles, Solid Bikes and Aire Valley Cycles. The 18-year-old came 24th at last year’s World Cup round in Schladming, Austria, and was the top ranked British junior.
His friend Tom, 21, who was also from Langcliffe, rode for local shop All Terrain Cycles on a Giant Glory. He won the Seniors category at the 2006 English DH Championships and was set to move up into Elite.
Dale Sedgwick, from All Terrain Cycles, told MBUK: “All of us here at All Terrain are in deep shock about the passing of two of our team mates, they will be sadly missed. Having thought very hard about what we can do we have come up with the idea of having a memorial MTB ride around Tom and Bens’ stomping ground in and around Settle where they lived and rode.
“We have set the date of Saturday 14 March [This was originally Sunday 15 March – Ed] .The ride will be starting on the village green in Langcliffe at 12noon where we will hold two mins of noise to celebrate the life of Ben and Tom, then we will go on to do the ride which will be 12 to 15 miles mostly off road.
“Carparking will be available for those attending. Camping facilities, and bike wash are also available at Knightstainforth campsite so you can book your spot if you are wanting to stay the night. If you mention you’re coming on the ride when booking the fee will be reduced to £10 per tent/campervan/caravan including electric if needed.
“In the evening there is going to be a big party held at Knightstainforth campsite. Starting at 6pm there will be food, live music, DJs, a raffle and general shindig in memory of the guys. Spaces for the evening event are going to be limited to around 200 due to the venue size and tickets will be £5 once they go on sale. All profits will be going into the memorial fund. Nothing major is planned for the Sunday, but there is plenty of great riding to be done around the location, so why not make new friends and expore this part of the Yorkshire dales with them!”
Raffle prizes are also being sought for the memorial event. If you’ve got anything you’d like to donate, you can get in touch with the organisers via their Facebook page or call Dale at the shop on 01274 588488.
The memorial fund will be used to purchase two trophies in each of Tom and Ben’s names as well as sponsor and support downhill racing in the UK over the forthcoming seasons.
