Wash out would be the understatement of the century! Saturday was pretty grim, with rain pouring down all day and I used practice just to learn the track, knowing it would only get worse. I managed just four runs all day.
Sunday was a far better day and we even saw a bit of sunshine. I was riding OK and felt fairly confident for the race, knowing conditions would be difficult for everyone and that mistakes were inevitable.
The top section of the course was on fern and bog so all the rain made this a nightmare with ruts up to your axles making it very difficult to carry speed.
But the course was drying out really fast and the whole bottom half of the track was bone dry. Tyre choice was a bit of an issue with the contrasting conditions and I ran cut spikes in common with most other riders.
My run went pretty good with just a few little mistakes and I was happy to get on the podium given that it was plain to see from practice how well the other Elites were riding. It’s always nice to get off to a good start for the year.
