Team Cycling Plus - first blog from team member Andy
Team Cycling Plus will be updating you each week with the highs and lows of their training as part of the team. Andy is up first with his week of turbo training and rides in the sun…
Being made part of the team has definitely inspired me to do more work on the bike. It could be the thought of having to fill in a training log, as required by our coach Ben, but I haven’t used the turbo trainer for months and suddenly it’s twice in a week! I normally find it a bit tedious and can’t really be bothered to set it up, but after a clear out in my garage I’ve got it all sorted so I can easily go out for a session after work. It helps that I’ve appropriated my daughter’s ghetto blaster and found some suitable music to spin to – Arctic Monkeys last week, Hot Chip this.
Finally got out on the road last Saturday afternoon in the spring sunshine – not an arm or knee warmer in sight. Felt good and had two stabs at beating my personal best maximum speed. There’s a relatively steep, straight road with good visibility near Slawston in Leicestershire. There are some steep hills round here, but they’re all pretty short, so unfortunately my old record still stands. I’ll keep going for it through the summer though.
A cycling highlight of the week was getting my five year old, Lily, to ride without stabilisers for the first time. Unfortunately I neglected to explain the use of brakes, and set her off on a short downhill section. Cue some impressive shrieking and a near faultless cyclo-cross dismount!
Enjoyed watching Paris- Roubaix even if it wasn’t quite as exciting a finish as previous years. Cancellara’s raw power is amazing to behold. Fantastic result for Britain’s Roger Hammond in holding off Tom Boonen for 4th. I would like to ride the cobbles one day, but will ride Leicestershire’s equivalent in the Pork Pies and Potholes sportive in July.
