Bont’s Helix race shoes have gained a stretch, retro-reflective coating, which is embedded in the upper’s Durolite material for durability and hugely increased visibility, without compromising style.
The shoes are based on Bont’s unidirectional Toray carbon fibre sole that boasts its proprietary epoxy thermoset resin, which allows for endless heat-moulding cycles so you can uniquely tailor the fit to your feet.
With an anatomical toe box based on the outline of a standing human foot, rather than the usual dress shoe style, there’s plenty of forefoot space.
The wrapover design needs a little more time to put on, but the semi-fixed tongue is always correctly positioned. The single BOA IP1 dial’s Kevlar lace is looped around the whole foot internally through the carbon sole for superior security.
Unlike the similarly arranged DMT RS1s, the Bonts are easy to tighten to a satisfactory tension. In fact, because the Helix uppers are so robust, I didn’t need to clamp my feet as firmly as with other shoes, allowing more freedom and comfort with no reduction in power transfer.
Out of the box, I found the memory foam-padded, arch-supporting Helix Reflex a great fit for my feet, even without heat moulding. Moulding the uppers and EVA insole only makes them better.
On the bike, they feel incredibly stiff and as efficient as it’s possible to get without fixing your foot directly to the pedal. There isn’t a trace of flex in the carbon sole, or give from the uppers, at any point in the pedal stroke, no matter how much power you apply.
Four small, mesh-covered vents within the toe’s TPU protector and perforations behind it and in the tongue provide limited ventilation, and the heel bumper is replaceable.
The low 3.6mm stack height of the Helix only accentuates the connected feel and, if performance is everything, they’re tough and a time triallist’s dream.
Despite their pliable padding, it can take a little time for your ankles to get used to the shoe’s relatively unyielding edges. Most riders shouldn’t have a problem, but their feel won’t suit everyone.
Impressively light at 569g in size 45 (EU), the Helix Reflex are available in 19 sizes and four width options.
