With the end of the summer on its way, and the evenings drawing in, daylight will soon be at a premium. And if you're a cyclist, that's not good news. Whether you commute to work or enjoy a good spin in the evening, the impending darkness isn't going to help you.

You'll probably want to look at getting some lights to make sure you remain safe and seen. What's more, it's a legal necessity if you want to ride on the road: you'll need a white light on the front of the bike and a red light at the rear, as well as a rear red reflector and amber pedal reflectors.

That's where Halfords can help you. It has a huge range of lights for bikes, catering for you needs, whether that's being able to see or be seen, or both. Its staff also have some good tips for you on what to go for.

If you're cycling in the darkness then you'll want lights to illuminate the way ahead. Look for lights with a high lumen output (brightness level); this is especially important for cycling on the road at night.

One light worth considering is the Cateye EL220/TL150 bike light set (£39.99). It has five LEDs and OptiCube lens technology that enables the lights to emit light at wider angles to light more of the path ahead.

The Lezyne Macro Drive LED rechargeable front/rear lightset (£84.99, below), is a more powerful set that has the ability to adjust the brightness. The Moon XP 500 Front Light also warrants consideration with its 500-lumen light output and quick-release mounting system (£107.99).

Other lights are more suited to enabling you to be seen – a good idea for commuters and in low-level light conditions.

The Knog Blinder 1 Front Light (£21.99, below) and Knog Blinder 1 Rear LED (£23.99) feature high-visibility LEDs that mean you can be seen from more than 500m away, with USB rechargeable batteries offering long run-times: two hours in constant mode and up to 11 in eco-flash mode, according to Halfords.

Finally, the Lezyne LED Femto Drive light is a value offering at £19.79. It's weather-resistant and includes a silicone strap that easily attaches to your bike or rear panniers.
