As much as we try to ignore it, #winteriscoming for bike riders in the northern hemisphere. It won’t be too long before autumn is upon us, at the very least, so this offer on Gore’s highly-rated C5 Gore-Tex Shakedry 1985 Jacket caught our eye.
UK retailer Evans Cycles is offering 30% off the dark blue version of the jacket, taking the price down from £250 to £175.
Gore’s Shakedry fabric has, ahem, shaken up the waterproof jacket market in the last couple of years, thanks to its superb waterproofing and breathability. We awarded the C5 Shakedry 1985 Viz version of the jacket five stars in December 2018.
“It’s difficult not to pour superlatives on the 1985, it just hits all the bases bang on,” said BikeRadar’s senior technical editor, Warren Rossiter.
Unlike a conventional three-layer waterproof jacket, Shakedry is made up of two layers. Gore has removed the outer face fabric, directly exposing the waterproof membrane to the elements.
In our experience, Shakedry offers persistent, permanent beading and, because there’s no face fabric, it won’t wet out like some regular waterproof jackets. It’s extremely lightweight, too.
“After plenty of showers and wet rides we’re still impressed with the 1985’s ability to shed water; you simply shake it or brush off the beaded water and the 1985 keeps on protecting,” said Warren.
It’s worth us pointing out that the jacket on offer doesn’t have the high-viz panels of our review piece, although it does have a little reflective detail on the chest, arms and back.
