While a prototype has been made as an example of how their design expertise can be translated into the world of bicycles, they have no current plans to send it into full production. It’s constructed from both aluminium and carbon, with a claimed frame weight of 2.5kg. Power is provided by a drive system consisting of a front wheel hub motor and a lithium-ion battery hidden within the frame. It will last around 85km on a full charge.
It also uses Magnetostriction sensor technology from the world of Formula One, which converts magnetic energy into kinetic energy and vice-versa. In the Ford e-bike - said to be the first application of the technology in the bicycle industry - the sensors gauge the speed of the inner wheel bearings. This information is instantly sent to the motor, activating or deactivating it and controlling its efficiency.
Components include a Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal gear hub and a Shimano Rapidfire shifter. A Carbon Belt Drive System, replacing the traditional chain, makes for a cleaner and lighter drive system.
