The essential iPhone application for the outdoor adventurer, although it does nuke your battery

The Memory Map application for the Apple iPhone is available for either £20, which allows transfer of maps between your phone and the Memory Map programme on your computer, or a free version, which is just compatible with your phone.

We tried the free app, which comes with 400 sq km of Ordnance Survey Landranger Maps and 100 sq km of Explorer maps. You use the free route planning map (where 1cm on screen is the equivalent to 100,000cm in reality) and scroll to where you need a detailed map, followed by hitting activate.

This will pull the map through 3G or WiFi networks and onto your phone, meaning that once on, they stay there and your phone only has to read your real-time position against the map, rather than loading the map.

It sounds complicated, but in use it’s actually user-friendly and allows for many useful things, including logging your route – which involves it taking speed, distance, route time, position, altitude, heading and even average speed against the map.

It really is a fantastic application, but using it constantly does tend to drain your battery, so be sure to have a back-up battery pack or the resource to charge it up on the fly.

Additional map credits are available through the programme at £12.50 for either 25,000 sq km of Landranger or 750 sq km of Explorer maps. Versions for France, Holland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also available.
