Light, robust and waterproof, this is ideal for smaller riders

Weighing in at under a half a kilo, the Ultratrail 12 is part of Vaude's new range of incredibly lightweight yet fully waterproof kit.

The latest Ultra Seam welding technology and a watertight zip ensure your cargo's dry, with two mesh outer pockets for stashing gloves or tubes. A malleable back panel with six breathable foam pads keeps things secure and comfortable. It has a short back though and is therefore best suited to shorter torsos - at 6'1", it only just fits me.

Although minimal, Vaude have found room for a bladder pouch (not included) that threads through either shoulder, a zippered pocket and a removable zippered purse - perfect for stashing keys and coins. A solid build is complemented by well-placed reflectors and an emergency whistle on the sternum strap, but there's only room for basic tools and extra layers - those with roomier demands should check out the Ultratrail 20 (£60).
